As one ages the body is not repairing itself as quickly as in our youth.  There are physical issues and degeneration which give us challenges like:

  • Calcification  & Inflammation

New studies suggest  inflammation has a deep cause – a “cellular trigger” hiding deep within our DNA which are the true culprit  behind the modern epidemic of inflammation and the disease that comes with it.

Deep within our DNA, located in the nucleus of each cell, are the building blocks or “blueprint” of every cell in your body.  At the end of each strand of DNA is a little bit of genetic material called the telomere.  This is the part of your chromosome that controls ageing.  As you age and your telomeres get shorter, your body produces cells that are older, weaker, and more decrepit.  The shorter your telomeres, the “older” your body is, regardless of your chronological age.  And this new research now reveals that it’s the short telomeres that ignites inflammation.  But when you slow the loss of your telomeres, you can extend the youthful quality of your blood vessels and avoid disease altogether.

A healthy inflammation response is essential for life (e.g. a cut finger), however chronic inflammation is a condition where an area is ALWAYS irritated, swollen and inflamed.  It’s the chronic inflammation that destroys  your endothelial cell barrier (ECB).  Your ECB wraps the inner lining of your blood vessels and constant inflammation will eventually destroy this protective covering.  New studies suggest the telomere is the controlling element, the ultimate trigger for chronic inflammation that leads to:  heart attack, heart disease, mental decline and stroke.

This now means you have a lot more control over your health and your future than you may have ever thought.    When you CONTROL the length of your telomeres, you can stop and reverse the damage cause d by chronic inflammation.

Researchers have found out resveratrol stimulates the product of adult stem cells called endothelial progenitor cells.  These stem cells are very powerful and have the ability to repair and heal the trouble areas in your ECB.  The more progenitor cells you have, the more likely you are to avoid disease.  This is supported by the fact that patients with high blood pressure and/or cardiovascular disease or diabetes have low levels of progenitor cells.

Resveratrol has the distinction of activating telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds your telomere.  Resveratrol is in:  Raisins, Purple Grape Juice, Peanuts, Mulberries, Eucalyptus Trees, Japanese Knot Wood.  You’d need to drink 1,000-3,000 glasses of wine to experience the life extending benefits of resveratrol!  However, taking supplements of 10-20mg/day will enable telomerase activation and the stimulation of endothelial progenitor cells. Resveratrol has a cousin that may be more effective, pterostilbene which works harder to support the colon, brain and cardiovascular system.  Both have remarkable effects on learning and memory.  Pterostilbene is more bioavailable and may be better than resveratrol at promoting a healthy, normal inflammatory response.  In clinical studies, pterostilbene seems to block an enzyme that oridinarily would make some free radicals stronger.

You can get pterostilbene from:  red-skinned grapes, blueberries, cranberries, lingonberries, bilberries and sparkleberries.

One of the best ways to measure inflammation is to have your doctor do a test ca;;ed C-reactive protein (CRP) which can be detected by a blood test.  Elevated levels indicate there is inflammation in the body, and this test is a predictor of heart disease.  To keep your levels of CRP low do moderate physical activity, or squats for 30 seconds or more, increasing the number every few days.  People who went from not exercising at all to exercising a small amount five times a week cut their CRP levels by as much as 30%.

Also, the carotenoid, astaxanthin, can lower inflammation and thereby lower your levels of CRP.  In one study, volunteers took 4mg of astaxanthin three times a day dropped their CRP by almost 21%  Astaxanthin also protects your DNA – your “cellular blueprint” that determines whether you stay healthy or not.  Those who took 8mg, it dropped by 43%.  Astaxanthin may be the best antioxidant for DNA protection since it’s 6,000 times more effective than vitamin C, 800 times more than CoQ10 and 550 times more than Vitamin E or green tea.
